What are the benefits of using a baby sling?

Using a sling reduces crying by over 51%

Pediatrics 1986 May;77(5):641-8.
“In a randomized controlled trial, 99 mother-infant pairs were assigned to an increased carrying or control group. At the time of peak crying, infants who received supplemental carrying cried and fussed 43% less overall, and 51% less during the evening hours (4 PM to midnight).

What is so different about a Mamma's Milk sling?

  • It's the sleekest adjustable baby carrier on the market. No buckles, rings, snaps, flaps, fabric tails, etc.
  • You can customize your carrier to get the exact fit for your body
  • Unlike front carriers, in a Mamma's Milk sling,  your baby relaxes in a natural fetal position, able to comfortably sleep while being soothed by your heartbeat, familiar scent, and movement.
  • You can use your carrier immediately after giving birth all the way through toddler hood. (Many carriers have minimum weight limits and can't be used with newborns.
  • Several different positions allow you to carry your baby in a fetal position, an upright position facing out, an upright position facing in, on your back, on your hip and more.

Customer comment
Well, my silk arrived today. And holy cow...that has to be one of the most gorgeous things I have EVER seen. Both my 9 year old and I just gasped when I ripped open the package. I have never seen a more gorgeous silk sling. The brocade is just delicious (the wave/rave is what I got) and the red silk lining....oh my...so luxurious. I can't keep from running my hands all over it. I can't wait for the baby to wake up so I can stuff him in there. :-D It is just incredible. I'm just sitting here slobbering. LOL. -Amy V.

Read why people are raving about Mamma's Milk slings .

Why should I use a sling instead of a stroller or car seat?

Babies prefer to be carried close to their parents. Studies have shown that babies who are carried as little as three hours a day cry 45% less than babies who are not carried. See more .

What's the difference between a front carrier and a sling?

  • Front carriers put unnatural stress on an infant's spine.
  • They're too bulky to keep in a diaper bag.
  • It's difficult, if not impossible, to breastfeed in most front carriers.
  • Front carriers are almost always outgrown before baby's first year, while slings can be used well into the third year (or until your child weighs around 35 pounds).
  • There's no waiting.  Most front carriers require baby to be a certain weight, while slings can be used as soon as the baby is born.
  • In a sling, your baby can sleep peacefully and comfortably in a natural fetal position.

Slings seem confusing to use.

It's actually much easier, not to mention quicker, than a traditional front carrier. It takes practice in the beginning, but then, so does anything with a new baby! Plus, there are so many positions; one is bound to become your favorite.

You'll have the best time if you try when your baby is well-rested and well-fed.

As soon as you put your baby in the sling, take a walk outside! Seems silly, but it works. Walk around, bounce, sway, or whatever comes naturally.

It seems like all that weight on only one shoulder would hurt!

The weight is actually distributed over not only your shoulder, but your entire back as well. As your baby grows, your muscles grow, too! It's also easier on your body than struggling with a stroller or car seat.

Using a sling will use muscles not normally used everyday. It's a bit like being sore after playing a new sport the first few times. A few tips:  your baby should be above waist level; the fabric should be spread over the ball of your shoulder (not all scrunched up by your neck). If it's digging into your neck, loosen the top velcro by an inch or so. If it's falling off, tighten the top velcro by an inch or so. Also,  switch shoulders from time to time (every few hours or more if you'd like).

What happened to the Pocket Pouches?

You asked for them to be adjustable and we finally took the hint. They've become adjustable due to popular demand! With each new batch of slings, you have the option of purchasing an optional Wipes Pack. Simply toss the Wipes Pack and a diaper or two into the pouch with your baby and you're good to go! Even easier than stuffing everything in a pocket and much more convenient, too!

Are Mamma's Milk slings pouches or ring slings?

Mamma's Milk slings are pouches.

What is the padding and is it supposed to be on the inside or outside?

Every Mamma's Milk sling includes padding. This padding is only where your baby's legs rest while in an upright position. This gentle padding makes a comfortable seat for your baby. This padding is designed to go on the inside and the Mamma's Milk label should be on the outside.

Am I using my pouch correctly?

Let's take The Cradle Hold, for example:  the baby's bottom should be right in the seam with the Mamma's Milk tag and that seam should be in line with your bellybutton.  If you're using an Invisibly Adjustable Pouch, the Aplix (velcro) should be across your back when wearing the pouch in the cradle hold.  The wonderful thing about the Aplix is that it's quite stiff and as a result, keeps the back of the pouch completely spread properly so that the weight of your baby is spread over your entire back and shoulder.

When using your sling with a newborn it might help to place a small (travel or child's size) pillow or a folded receiving blanket and put that in the pouch before you put your baby in. This will raise your baby up a bit in the pouch so s/he's not so squished.

Babywearing is so wonderful but like anything new, can require some getting used to!  The best is yet to come, believe me.  Once your son realizes that he is safe and cozy in the pouch, it will be a wonderful tool.  I don't know if you've had a chance to read "The Baby Book" by Dr. Sears yet, but if you haven't, go get it at your bookstore or library!!! It's the most life-changing book for child rearing.  It's like reading a doctor say what you have in your heart -- absolutely unbelievable.  This book is what got me (and millions of other moms, lol) from the Baby Bjorn to the sling. When baby fusses in the evening (Sears calls this "the grandmother hour"), you can actually soothe him easily with the sling.  Your husband or mother can use the sling to easily put baby to sleep this way.
