Babywearing Positions

For the Cradle Position:
(best for newborns up to 6 months)
For the Newborn Back Position:
(for newborns until they are able to roll over)

Make sure that the two sides of the sling are evenly distributed on both sides of the baby, so that the baby is safely in the pouch. Lay your baby’s head down into the pouch near your chest.

This is the only style of carrier that allows you to do this. Just follow the above instructions for the cradle position and then slide baby to the back. Please be extra careful in this position!

The Heart-To-Heart Position:
(appropriate for newborns until 20 lbs.)
For the Kangaroo Position:
(for babies 3 – 6 months)

This position is great if your newborn prefers to be upright. Slide the sling backwards so that the bottom seam is at your belly button. Slide your baby down from your right shoulder through both layers of the sling, stopping when his/her bottom is at the top edge of the sling. Spread the two layers apart and tuck the bottom layer under his/her bottom, up to the crease behind his/her knees. Now pull the outer layer up right to the base of his/her neck. For newborns without any head support, you can pull the sling up to the top of their head.)

Slide the sling backwards so that the bottom seam is at your belly button. With your baby still up on your right shoulder, turn him/her around so that you are facing his back. Now fold his/her legs “Indian-style.” Gently tuck his/her knees to his/her chest while lowering them into the pouch. Pull the sling up in front of him/her to his/her chest. Make sure the back of the sling goes up their back.

\"The Shoulder Flip\"
Adjusting your sling for smaller babies in the Kangaroo and Traditional Hip Positions:
For wearing twins:
(we have known people who have comfortably worn their twins up to 20 lbs. -each!)

The Shoulder Flip helps snug smaller babies up closer and gives them more support. To do The Shoulder Flip: fold the top layer of the sling over, towards your arm.

Place each baby in separate slings, one over each shoulder. You can have both children in front, both in back, one in front and one in back, or one on either hip.

For the Traditional Hip Position:
(for babies with head control, usually 4 – 6 months and older)

With the bottom seam at your right hip and your baby on your right shoulder, slide your baby down through both layers of the sling until the top of the sling reaches his/her bottom. Now spread the two layers of fabric, making a pouch for the baby to sit in. His/her right leg will be in front of you, while his/her left leg will be behind you. The bottom layer of fabric must not only go under the baby’s bottom, but all the way to the creases behind his/her knees. Now pull the top layer up to the baby’s neck. (For older babies, the fabric will only go mid-way up the back.) To get the baby’s upper body closer so that they are not “flopping around,” fold the top layer of the shoulder part over from your neck towards your arm. If you have a reversible Mamma’s Milk sling, this means that the coordinating fabric will be showing on your shoulder.

For the Toddler Hip Position:
(For toddlers who want to get in and out of the sling often)
For the Toddler Back Position:
(A comfortable back carry and very useful for getting work done. For babies who can sit unassisted - usually 6+ months.)
Follow the instructions for the Traditional Hip Position, but instead of spreading the two layers apart to make a pouch, simply have them sit on the folded sling. * This is not a hands-free position, so you must support their back.

Follow the instructions for the Traditional Hip Position. Once baby is at your hip, simply pull the front part of the sling in one direction with one hand and gently push the baby in the opposite direction with the other hand.
